Your Future and God’s Faithfulness

He and he’s there. He’s at the conclusion. Jeremiah 29:11. Now this is one. This is gonna be a hard truth.

Like I have to get the hard truths in there because it can’t all be sunshine and rainbows when I’m up here. So I have to talk about separate. Jeremiah 29:11. We love this verse, right? Because God says, I know the plans for you, declares the Lord.

Plans to prosper you and not to harm you. Plans to give you hope and a future. Such a great verse. And boy, we love it. It’s on lumber stickers, it’s on posters, it’s usually in like a doorway, right?

You walk into someone, have Chandler, it’s probably stenciled in the 90s, you know, over, over, like a doorway. But like real talk, biblical context of this verse, you better remember what was going on, right? And this verse is not a promise that you will have that smoking hot wife or you will get that VP spy or you’ll live to be 108. Sorry, I really wanted it to be. But in the context of this verse, the Israelites were in exile in Babylon as a consequence of their disobedience and their idolatry.

Now false prophets, false prophets in exile were telling them, you’re going to soon return to Jerusalem. It’s coming. The Lord has a plan not to harm us, to prosper us. And Jeremiah was instructed to tell them the truth about their future, which was, you’re not going to come out for a while. Your exile will be landing.

So Jeremiah 29:11, when it says, I have a plan to give you a hope and a future. The hope and the future were not deliverance from Babylon. The hope was Christ and the future was eternal life. Hallelujah. That’s what that verse is talking about.

Your future, your prosperity, your inheritance, your reward is Jesus and only Jesus. Anything else is great, that’s gravy, but it’s just for here and now. It’s like the Word says, you’re like a mist. James nails it, right? He’s like, what do you mean you’re vapor and you’re gone.

And he’s not trying to minimize our importance, he’s trying to redirect our focus to what the real reward is, what the real future is. And it is never something so tiny and small minded and short sighted as a great job or living to be a hundred. He says, your hope is the truth. That is Jesus Christ, the truth, the word made flesh, who was here before the world began and wrote your name in the book of Life. That is your future.

Your future is eternity. And if you can’t even believe that, why is Kenneth revealing anything to you about the days burn on this planet? He’s not going. I got news. If we cannot take hold of the fact that Jesus Christ is our hope and eternity is our future, you can sit, pray all day, oh, Lord, you’re going to do this thing.

Oh, Lord, you’re going to give me that. Oh, Lord, when is this going? He’s not going to do anything. He’s like, you can’t even. You can’t even handle the truths that are out there written in black and white.

I’m not going to give you the secret things, right? And it was really hard. I mean, in cher Malia, 600 people, years before Christ. 600 years. They waited a long.

They waited a long time. Now, God knows this plan. He made this plan. And it will come to pass. But the reality is, can you miss the plan?

Can you walk off the plan? Don’t worry. Not going to go into why that may or may not be possible. But from our perspective, whatever your theological underpinnings, yes, from our perspective, we can’t, because we do it all the time, right? We walk off the path all the time and things go awry.

We know we can’t. Maybe it’s arrogance, maybe it’s apathy. Maybe it’s rebellion. You know, pick your flavor. Jamie says that too.

You know, he’s like, you’re so arrogant that you talk about your plans for tomorrow. You don’t know. You’re not guaranteed anything. But here’s the great news. You can always get back on track.

You can always get back on track. It’s never too late. The Bible’s filled with stories of people who probably really thought it was too late. And God’s point was, it’s not. Not with me.

Nothing is impossible with me. And maybe his plan is the look of things on the cross. And that’s your plan. And it’s, you know, a couple minutes, and then, boom, you’re in eternity. And okay, it was a short while, but it was still the plan, and it was still God’s perfect plan.

So the question is not, does God have a plan for my future? The plan is, am I ready to align with it? Am I ready to get on board with his plan for my future? Turn three. God will be with me.

He will be with you every step into your future. Hebrews. Hebrews is so good. You know, Hebrews 13:5 says, never will I leave you, Never will I forsake you. And there’s a lot of gravitas to that.

You know, who says that to Leon, you know, and said, never will I leave you. Never will I forsake you. What? I mean, can you imagine? But that’s what God’s saying.

It’s like he’s holding onto your shoulders. He’s going, never will I leave you. Never will I forsake you. It’s important that we know that this year, any year, guys, it could bring layoffs, it could bring diagnosis, it could bring breakups, it could bring breakthroughs. It could bring all of it.

But you don’t know. We don’t know, and we’re not meant to know. The only thing you’re meant to know is that you will not face it alone. You will never face it alone. It’s not possible for God to ghost you.

He will be with you every step of the way because he knows how scary it is for us not to be able to see to the end of the line because we’re bound, right? Like these earthly kind of temporal, you know, physics and things. And he’s not. He’s outside of it. He knows that we’re in it, so he’s going to be with us.

Okay? Now those are the three truths about your future. That’s what we have to have kind of as our basis. God knows every detail. God has a plan, and he wrote the plan.

And he will be with you every step in into the future. Now, before we move on to part two of six jokes. Just part. Just two. Just two parts.

We want to roll back to our theme verse today because it’s important. It’s really, really important because when we get to our, you know, like, what’s our. What’s our call to action today? It’s important to know the order of the words in this verse. Psalm 34.

1. I sought the Lord and he answered me. He delivered me from all my fears. Now let’s roll back and look at it. Okay, it’s not up there.

That’s fine. Who do we seek? The Lord. It doesn’t say, I sought my mentor. I sought tick tock advice.

I sought my therapist. Although shout out y’ all can number four. All the therapists. It’s like, we love you. But it says when it comes to fear, because this verse, remember, it’s like an if, then if I seek the Lord, then I will be delivered from my fears.

That has to come first. You have to seek God first. The secret to over. Because the secret to overcoming your fear is to understand that for every fear you have, there is an attribute or a characteristic of God that applies to that fear. Something that corresponds, which means here’s the inference we can draw.

Every fear we have comes from a fundamental lack of understanding of who God is. We will never conquer our fears if we don’t learn who God is and his character. And you can’t do that if you don’t seek him and talk to him and read about him and get around other people who know Him. Right? See God.

Once we understand who God really is, we would never have anything to be afraid of. That’s why Jesus had no fear. He’s like, I have the Father one, I have the mind of God. What do I have to be afraid of? That is the scary.

So today we’re specifically talking about one fear, right? The fear of the future. What do we think the corresponding attribute of God is to. To address a fear of the future? You take hers, I’ll answer.

The answer is faithfulness. God’s faithfulness. Now, what does faithfulness mean? It means God cannot lie. He cannot break a promise.

He does exactly what he says he will do. He cannot be unfaithful to you. He cannot abandon you. He cannot forsake you. It is impossible.

If you are ever feeling that rising swirl of panic, and you know exactly what I’m talking about when you feel it, and it feels overwhelming in the what ifs, the what ifs, the what ifs, and then you start to feel bad about the what ifs. God’s faithfulness isn’t Cephal. It is who he is. He is faithful. Psalm 145 tells us the Lord is faithful to all his promises.

So he’s not just faithful to us, he’s faithful to all his promises. And that’s where we’re heading next. Because he can’t break those promises. So what does that have to do with my future? There are something like 7,000 promises in the Bible.

And I wasn’t going to talk about all of that, but I narrowed it down to five. You love them. We’re just going to talk about mine today. Come back next week, we’ll talk about the other 6,995. And I thought about these.

We narrowed them down. And this is God saying, if you believe these. See, that’s another inch. Then if you believe these, if you trust me, you’ll love them because you’re about your future. So let’s jump in.

Part two, Five guarantees five promises for my future. Number one, love this. Love one. I love this one. I can depend on God to guide me when I am confused.

So all of these promises relate to aspects of fear that come out of fear. Because fear shows a lot of things. Confusion is one of them. And we are living in a world of confusion, decision fatigue. It’s so, so real.

I mean, you guys know how, how many times do we sit on the couch and turn on our smart TV and there are 87 extreme services to which we all subscribe and they keep raising their prices and they know we’re not going to quit. And we will flip and flip and scroll and scroll and scroll and scroll and scroll and scroll and scroll and scroll and there’s nothing. And we cannot choose and we cannot make a decision. And then we get frustrated, maybe argue a little bit, and then we go to bed. How many else can relate?

But now multiply that right by career choices and parenting and finances and dating, you name it. So when you have to make decisions and you’re faced with confusion, what’s going to be your source for advice? You can go to your friends and ask them what to do, but they could be as wrong as you are. Just ask Jim. They may not have the best advice.

You could go to a counselor, but really their job is actually to help you figure out what you already know. They’re not magical. They’re not going to magically have. They’re not. They’re not going to be able to necessarily prophesy.

Their job is actually to help you uncover your own truths. You could read a magazine, read a book, you could ask chat GPT. But let me tell you something. Chat GPT. I catch him, he is wrong a lot.

You could go to a psychic. You could your horoscope. People still do that. You get open a fortune cookie, you can check your biorhythms. There lots of stuff you can do, but it’s all baloney.

It’s all nonsense at best. And portals to demonic strongholds at worst. A lot of this stuff, right? Going outside. Because at the end of the day, it really is arrogance, if you think about it.

When you go to anybody besides God to help eliminate confusion because you’re still in control of that somehow. And we want to be in control and we want to make our own decisions. And we will avoid the right person, the right prayer, the right scripture, and we will do everything else to fix the problem except go to where we need to go. There’s only one 100% reliable source about your future, and that’s God. Proverbs 3.

Such a great verse. Proverbs 3, 5, 6. Say, Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Never rely on what you think. Think you know.

I love how he doesn’t say, never rely on what you know. He says, don’t rely on what you think you know. I mean, God’s already saying, you think you don’t know. Don’t rely on it. Remember the Lord and everything you think you do, and he will show you the right way.

God’s already there. He’s already in the future. Why would we not trust in Him? Leaning on our own understanding is not going to get us anywhere. So how do you do that?

How do you get guidance from God when you’re confused? Well, you really have two main things. You gotta read his Word in context. Read Jeremiah 29:11. Read the whole thing.

Who’s he talking to? We’re gonna talk about Philippians four later, too. I can give all things. Read it in context. I got news.

It’s about to be. Read it in context. Infrastructure. Let God talk to you and you talk to God. You have to talk to him.

Develop a line of communication. And it will take practice. And even people have been doing it for years, decades. They will have moments. You can just ask Pastor Leonard, anybody who’s been in ministry for years.

You will have moments in the desert when you’re not hearing something. And guess what? That’s advice in and of itself, isn’t it? When you don’t hear something from God, he’s teaching you something. Like, you have to practice that.

We practice everything else. We practice our fitness, we practice our art, we practice our cooking. We practice everything. But we won’t practice this. We don’t get in and we read.

You know why? Because, ugh. Takes time. I puke my brain. But you have to.

That’s the only way. Let God tell him to do you. Now, he doesn’t say, you don’t need to fear the future because it’s going to be a better rose. Isn’t easy. We know that, don’t we?

We have a friend of our church who just recently lost herself. Sun. There’s no bed of roses here. There’s no such having rainbows for her right now. But she knows who holds her future.

Amen. And that’s what she focuses on. And you have to choose that each time. And he says, I’m going to be with you every step of the way. Now another thing that.

That fear will bring out in us temptation. So the second promise is you can depend on God to assist. Assist you when you are tempted. Fears will bring that out when, when you’re just. When you’re living in that realm of fear and you don’t know what’s happening, you’re going to be so much more subject to fall to temptations.

But first, Corinthians 10 tells us that no temptation is irresistible. None. I don’t want to hear anybody in here say ever again, the devil made me do it. That’s Bali. No, he didn’t.

He can’t make you do nothing. No, he cannot. If you are a believer and you know Jesus Christ as your savior, he absolutely cannot make you do anything. Eliminate that from your vocabulary. Because the more you say that and think it, the more you’re going to let it do it.

And we, even if you’re not there yet, you’re like, man, I’m following some temptation. Say it anyway, declare it anyway. That’s going to hurt, not hurt you. You got to say that. But Corinthians says you can trust God to keep the temptation for becoming so strong that you cannot stand up against it.

For he has promised this and will do what he says. He will show you how to escape. Now look, I’m a fitness instructor. I love burpees, I love dips, I love push ups. But I also love chips and salsa and marnies and all manner of desserts.

Next week went to make white chocolate stuffed red velvet cookies. Please enjoy. But there’s been speaking new guys, right? A lot of times God doesn’t need to give you the supernatural escape like, you know, a path that no one can see. Sometimes it’s really as simple as man, I’m on a diet.

We should go to the Chinese buffet or you go to Subway and you get a six inch turkey, you know, on whole wheat with sliced tomato. I mean there’s some real easy stuff, y’, all, to avoid temptation, but the same thing, same thing as before. How did you do it? How is he going to assist you? Well, how do we learn about his assistance?

Oh my goodness. Same answer. Read his word, talk to him, be in communication with him, get around other people who know what your temptations are and say, please help, please help pull me out of this thing. And he will do it. Number three, something else.

The fear brings overwhelmed. I can depend on God to support me when I am overwhelmed. Now this, this is especially true today, especially moms and parents. The overwhelm is so real. Especially for women who are moms, who also are in full time work and full time ministry.

It can feel absolutely overwhelming. Or when you’re facing financial crises or your Marriage is falling apart or you’ve lost a child. The overwhelm can be extreme. The absolute best verse, God speaks to this in Isaiah 43 and he says, when you go through deep waters of great trouble, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown.

When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up. Why? For I am. I am the Lord your God. Now.

Is there anybody in here who knew that song? Isaiah 43? Anybody from like the 90s? You remember in the 90s peak horseshit, by the way. Like late 80s, early 90s.

If you missed it, I’m sorry, find some YouTubes, but everything was selling rounds. Do you remember that or you had the repeats? Did nobody remember Isaiah 43, when you pass through the waters. Hi. Nobody.

Okay, come talk to me later and we’ll sing it together. It’s in a round. There’s Reki. But let’s unpack that verse. Right.

What does it say when you. Not if. When you are going through the waters, when you are walking through the fire. Those are not avoidable. We’re not going to get out of it.

No one’s going to escape this world and this life without some level of overwhelm tragedies, their grief, sorrow. I’m sorry, that’s just. That’s a function of us not yet being made perfect like Jesus. But he says, I am with you. And more importantly, I am the Lord your God.

I am. I think that’s the most important part of that verse. Life is going to feel like it’s too much. Your calendar is going to be overbooked. Technology makes things simultaneously better, faster, more efficient, and yet immensely more overwhelming because of the amount you’re expected now to fit into the same 24 hour period.

But God is going to give you only the strength that you need for today. Not before, not after, right on time. When you’re overwhelmed and when you’re asking God to come in and to support you when you’re overwhelmed, we need to get in the habit of asking for, give me today, my daily bread, just enough for today. Because what does Yahweh mean? The name of God.

In the Old Testament now we used to say I am. Right, because he says to Moses, I am that I am. So that’s not actually the most correct translation because Hebrew, it didn’t really have a past, present, future tense like modern Hebrew does today. So the most accurate translation of Yahweh is God, his name. The name of God is to be.

And I’m Going that even better. It’s a non conjugated verb. He just be. Who is God? He be.

That’s what I was saying. Everybody’s like, I am, I’m like, he be. You know, he, he was and he is and he will be all at the same time. That is the point. He was, he is now and he will be in the future.

When we arrive in the future and it’s all, all happening simultaneously because there is no time for God. There is no timeline for God. There is no past and future and present. It’s all, it just is and he just is. So we have to learn to trust him.

Just for today, you’re going to have to break it down. You may have 50 things going wrong, but you’re going to have to say, okay, I am just going to talk to him today about my daily grit. Just for today. Number four. Next Promise.

I can depend on God. I realized how late it was. I’m, I’m moving. Sorry about that. I can depend on God.

Oh boy. I can depend on God to defend me when I’m offended. Offense. Such a thing that fear breaks up. Because you know what if I am living in a, in a mode of just pure faith, faith, you know, relying on God, depending on God, the offensive stuff rolls right over me.

And it will you too. And if it’s not, if your immediate reaction to something is this like deep offense, instead of immediately thinking about the other person, this nasty thing they did, look inward and go, okay, why am I, why am I feeling that way? What am I? How am I not relying on God? Now I’m a non practicing lawyer and I love to argue and I love to be right.

Luckily I am right like most of the time. So I don’t have to argue too much. But you don’t actually have to clap back. You don’t actually have to win every argument because God keeps the seats better than you do. In fact, there is a phenomenal, almost like non argument that takes place in the New Testament that Jesus is put on trial.

So he’s before the Romans, he’s going before Pilate. He’s already gone before the high priest had been slapped. And he’s just trying to speak the truth. And there’s this sham of a trial and he’s going through with no real due process. And it goes like this, right?

Pilate comes out, he’s like, okay, are you the king of the trees? That’s what they keep insisting that you’re saying. He was probably thinking, why is it so bad? I don’t know. Jesus said, is that your own idea, or did others talk to you about it?

He’s talking about, oh, my goodness. Jesus just jumped right in. He’s like, where’s your dad? Notice it’s also asking a question, right? When met with.

With an accusation or a question, you respond with a question. It’s just brilliant. I’m sure they could teach you sermon after sermon after sermon on the brilliance of the conversation between Jesus and Pilate. To be honest and pilot healing is not to be one ups. He comes right back.

The nether questions like, can I do? Am I. Do I look like one of you? Do I look like, you know, I care? Your own people on.

The chief priest handed you over to me. What is it that you have done? Jesus says, my kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now I came to this from another place.

So you are a king. That Pilate says you admit it. Jesus said. You said that. You said, I am a king.

And in fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. And everyone on the side of truth listens to me. Pilate says, what is truth? And it was over. There was no point.

There was no point continuing. And Jesus was making a point. He’s like, look, if they are not on the side of truth, which is me, because I am the truth. I am truth, right? Pilot’s like, what is truth?

And Jesus, he. He’s standing right there. But you, he didn’t have to say anything. He’s like, I am truth. I am empty.

She, this is the answer. And it sounds trite, but he is. If they are not on the side of truth, these people who have offended you, why are you arguing? They cannot know. They.

They. They cannot respond in the way you want them to respond. They will not. They will not. Romans 12:19 says, Never avenge yourselves.

Leave that to God, for he has said that he will repay those who deserve it. You don’t know who deserves it. Maybe it’s you. Maybe it’s me. And he’s gonna come over here and heap the punishment on me, and I deserve it.

I don’t know. I don’t even know. We’re sitting over here flipping out, scaring about the future. I think I know who deserves vengeance. Do you hear that?

We don’t know what’s happening tomorrow. I don’t know what’s gonna happen in my bank account, but, boy, I sure know who. I should lambast on Facebook and Write an article about. I know it. I know it.

They deserve. They deserve vengeance. They deserve it. I’m going to drag their names through the mud. It’s so inane.

We don’t know anything. We are honest. We are a victor. But we know that God sees every hurt you receive. He’s keeping score.

He’s faithful when we are not. And one day, he will settle that score. And it won’t have nothing to do with us. It’s about him. Because the grievances ultimately are, you know, me.

Whatever. It’s against God. And he can defend himself. You can either defend yourself or let God do it. Who’s better at it is the question.

That was rhetorical. We all know the answer. So don’t waste. Don’t waste time defending yourself. And the second you stop and you go, you’re gonna feel so much better.

I’m gonna cheat the center seat. Oh, it’s hard to let go. Leon’s gonna be like, yeah, I’ll remind you of this. Okay. Last, last promise.

Okay. This one is actually a good one. Well, they’re all good because God is good. I can depend on God to reward me when I am faithful to Him. Oh, my goodness.

We’re talking about getting something good, not just condemnation and, you know, punishment. What is happening? Miranda’s talking about happiness and rewards. Oh, by the way, I do think I have a misprint. There’s a misprint in the notes.

When it comes up, it says Hebrews. I think I might say Hebrews 8, but I apologize. I think it’s Hebrews 6. Hebrews 6 says, God is not unfair. He will not forget all that you have done, nor the loving labor which you have shown for his sake.

Some of you are tired. Some of you are ready to give it up. You’ve been doing the right thing. You had zero applause. No one sees it.

It’s only been heaped upon you. More abandonment or bitterness or resentment. You do the right thing week after week after week. All you get for it, it seems, is more misery. The late night prayers, the quiet generosity that so many of you show all the time, every day, showing up when you don’t feel like it.

Nothing is wasted. None of it is wasted. We just sang it earlier today. First John 5 says, this is the testimony that God gave us eternal life. And this life is.

Is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life. Whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. Jesus is coming back. And it says in revelation, I am coming with my reward.

That’s what he Says it’s like the last thing he said. We close out this incredible apocalyptic, prophetic message to John. He’s not coming back, and I’m bringing my reward with me. And your reward is eternity in the sun. Your reward is Jesus.

You have it. That is your reward when you are faithful to God. But other stuff is going to follow, I promise. It may not be immediate. I hope it’s not 600 years.

I hope it’s like between, you know, five minutes and. And five, 500 years. But I can’t promise that. God doesn’t promise us that. So if we believe these promises right, if we believe what God says in relationship to my future, that I can depend on him to guide me when I’m confused, that I can depend on him to assist me when I am tempted, to support me when I’m overwhelmed, to defend me when I’m offended, and to reward me when I’m faithful, then what am I?

I’m asking myself this. What are you really afraid of? If we believe all those things, they’re gone. At the end of the day, any fear we have, if anything about our future feels scary, it’s not actually about what might or might not happen. It’s all about, do we trust the one who holds our future?

Do we trust the one who holds our future, even if it’s hard? What if my future is like Moses and I don’t get to see the promised land? That was his future. That was what God had for him. And it was perfect because God is perfect.

He does not make mistakes. Moses trusted him anyway. Moses trusted the one who holds the future that only I love it. I know who holds the future because he lives. I could face tomorrow, not because I know it’s going to happen.

Not because I have money in my bank account, not because I have a husband who loves me and children who are healthy. That is not why I can face tomorrow. I face tomorrow because he’s alive, because Jesus is alive and because he holds the the future. And there’s not one thing that has ever happened but will happen, that happens outside. If you say so.

So if I believe that, you’ve really got two options. You can drown in your own anxiety and I have been there, or you can surrender to God’s faithfulness. Right? Philippians 4:13 says, I have strength for all things in Christ, who empowers me. I am ready for anything and equ to anything through him who infuses inner strength into me.

This doesn’t mean you won’t feel fear. It just means you’re going to have the strength to do the next right thing. Anyway, here’s the thing. You might still be scared. A lot of times you got to do the thing to feel the thing, you know?

If you’re waiting to not feel scared before taking the step, you’ll probably just continue to feel scared forever. Disney, you know, they get it right like every. Every every once in a while, like once a century or something. And I think one thing they got really, really right was most of the lyrics of a song from Frozen 2 that Anna sings, and it’s called the Next Right Thing. And she says, hello, darkness, I’m ready to succumb.

I’m like, oh, okay. This grief has a gravity and pulls me down. Can there be a day beyond this night? I don’t know anymore what is true. But I won’t look too far ahead.

It’s too much for me to take. But instead I’ll break it down to this next breath, this next step, this next choice is one that I can make. So I walk through this night, stumbling blindly toward the light and do the next right thing. And with the dawn, what comes then? When it’s clear that everything will never be the same again?

Won’t it not be fun then? I’ll still make the choice to hear my insertion God’s voice and do the next right thing. That’s all you can do. Admit God. I’m scared.

I don’t know if I can handle. Handle it anymore. And then you say, God, give me your strength because I am weak. Give me your strength to just act to faith. One step, one day, one declaration at a time.

You have to keep it home. And don’t compare yourselves to anybody else. Their journey is not yours. What is the next right thing? Your future’s coming.

And you will arrive there. We all will. But God is going to truth you, even if nobody else’s might be knowing. But he’s in your future. He’s already there.

And he wrote it. He wrote your story. Father, we thank you so much for the promises that you have given us. There’s thousands, thousands upon thousands. Because you are faithful, you cannot fail to fulfill those promises.

Thank you, Jesus. As your word says, look, I am coming soon. My reward is with me. And I will give to each person according to what they have done. I am the alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.

I am the past. I am the present and the future. He who testifies to these things says, yes, I am coming soon. But even Jesus doesn’t know when that day is, Father. You told us that.

You said nobody. So therefore we have to keep watch because we don’t know what day our Lord is coming back. We have to be ready because the Son of Man will come at an hour that we do not expect. We’re waiting, Lord. Come, Lord Jesus.
